Family members of former Dhaka University student Elma Chowdhury Meghla have drawn the attention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to ensure that the investigation into the case is not influenced by influential quarters.

At a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Wednesday, they questioned how the lone accused, Meghla's husband Iftekhar, was granted bail by submitting suspicious documents.

Meghla's mother Sharmin Chowdhury said bail had been granted before the investigation report was submitted to the Dhaka Sessions Judge's Court.

The accused has submitted a copy of the report and autopsy report to the court, he said, adding that the accused may have fled the country as his passport was not confiscated.

"The court did not consider inconsistencies in the postmortem report before granting bail, he said.

A month ago, when my husband went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital to get a copy of the autopsy report, he was told that the report had been sent to the police station a month ago. Then the police station told us to go. DB police.

Then DB asked us to give the document number from the police station or hospital. The drama continues for several weeks, ”he said.

At one stage, we were called to the DB office for the second time and mentally harassed in the name of giving an autopsy report. We were indirectly pressured to accept the incident as suicide.

He asserted that his family had lost out on the exploiters' power, money and status. I want a speedy and fair trial, he added.

Other members of Meghla's family and his friends were present at the press conference.
